Unesco IHE visits Dordrecht
Forty students from the international institute for water education, Unesco-IHE paid a visit to
Dordrecht. For over 5 years now students have been visiting the city as part of their education
because of the innovative approach Dordrecht has in relation to water management, especially
with regards to water safety. Also 3 students have done their MSc graduation project on the case
study Dordrecht, directly contributing to the MARE project.
Main topic of the day was the MARE project, in which Dordrecht investigates new ways to make
Dordrecht climate-proof in relation to water. During the day the students attend presentations
about MARE, discussing the influences of climate change on urban areas and ways to deal with
this. The day was closed of with an excursion to the historic city centre.
The forty multi-cultural students origin from countries like Indonesia, Ghana, Yemen, Iran and
Nepal, people from 20 different countries in total were present today. Alderman of Urban
Planning, Mr. P.H. Sleeking, is proud of the fact that Dordrecht developed a water policy that is of
interest to so many people from so many different cultures. He is happy to be able to share the
knowledge and expertise gained through MARE with the Unesco-IHE and its students, the next
generation of water policy makers.
