LAA Dordrecht

Description of the partnership

In the Netherlands, the MARE project is focused on the city of Dordrecht. With an extended Learning and Action Alliance composed of all levels of government, knowledge institutions and private contractors, the project aims at the development and demonstration of integrated management approaches for urban (high)water management.

Water is an intrinsic part of the city of Dordrecht. In the middle ages the city prospered because of its advantageous location in the Dutch Delta, where its major rivers meet the sea. The water also was a risk; the St. Elisabeths flood of 1421 shaped the island on which the city is located. Up to this day, water has had an important role in development of the city. The City of Dordrecht is setting out to achieve sustainable development within the city and it is exploring opportunities to integrate water policy and water safety policy with urban the development process.
